From April 1, 2025, the annual spring-summer spawning ban on catching aquatic biological resources began in Ukraine on most fishing reservoirs. Its purpose is to create favorable conditions for the reproduction of fish and the preservation of aquatic fauna. «Spawning is one of the most important periods of reproduction of fish populations, the success of which depends on the development and future quantity of aquatic biological resources. Therefore, I urge fishermen to treat spawning fish responsibly and adhere to the established restrictions», — Vladislav Nevesely, head of the Derzhribagency, explained.
During the spawning period, fishing is allowed only from the shore, outside the spawning grounds, using hook fishing gear with no more than two hooks per person or spinning with one artificial bait. Commercial fishing and spearfishing are prohibited during this time.
To ensure peaceful spawning, the movement of all types of transport and motor vessels on reservoirs is also restricted, with the exception of established shipping routes. Exceptions are only vessels belonging to fish protection services or other authorized state bodies.
Violation of these requirements entails liability — from an administrative fine to a criminal penalty, as well as the obligation to compensate for the damages caused to the fishery.
«We warn fishermen against committing violations, especially taking into account the fact that during the spawning period, fish guards of the State Fisheries Agency exercise control over water bodies in an intensified mode», — emphasized in the department.
