50,000 protesters to gather in Washington ahead of Trump’s inauguration

Two days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, about 50,000 people will gather in Washington to protest against his presidency and to defend human rights. This was reported by The Washington Post.
The organisers expect 50,000 people to take part in the People’s March on Washington protest on 18 January, two days before the swearing-in ceremony.
The National Park Service has received more than 10 applications to hold rallies by the end of January 2025. The topics of the events include elections, democracy, abortion, the conflict between Israel and Gaza, and a Women’s March demonstration.
Among the co-organisers of the People’s March on Washington are human rights organisations such as:
‘Women’s March, which has already published announcements of events and calls for activists;
‘Abortion Access Now – the organisation will continue to fight for reproductive rights;
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which is preparing to oppose possible changes in legislation;
‘Planned Parenthood;
The National Women’s Law Centre, which promises to resist authoritarian tendencies and support issues of priority to women and families over the next four years.
Among the topics of concern to the marchers are
- protecting the right to abortion after the Roe v. Wade decision is overturned
- climate change;
- pay equality between men and women;
- paid parental leave at the federal level;
- extension of the child tax credit introduced during the pandemic;
- fair remuneration of labour;
- measures to prevent gun violence;
- ensuring legal status for immigrants, which would open the way to citizenship.
