8 people detained in Slovakia in case of possible embezzlement of funds allocated to Ukraine

Eight people, including employees of the Ministry of Defense, have been detained in Slovakia as part of an investigation by the European Prosecutor’s Office into the possible misappropriation of funds intended for military support to Ukraine. About this reported press service of the European Prosecutor’s Office.
On June 18, investigative actions were carried out, during which evidence was collected in the case of the alleged misuse of funding allocated for assistance to Ukraine. The total amount of probable losses is estimated at 7.4 million euros. Among those detained are four civil servants of the Ministry of Defense of Slovakia.
The investigation was launched in April 2025 and concerns high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense, who are suspected of misuse of funds intended for the supply of military aid to Ukraine. In particular, in the period from February to March 2022, these officials appealed to the European Peace Fund with a request to compensate for the costs of ammunition supplied to Ukraine.
The investigation believes that the suspects deliberately violated official duties and budget legislation by issuing unsubstantiated orders to purchase ammunition from two private companies. There is a suspicion that the tender procedures were falsified, and the purchase took place at inflated prices.
The investigation is being carried out in cooperation with the Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Slovak Police. Currently, all detainees are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
As a reminder, the European Prosecutor’s Office is an independent EU body responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes related to the financial interests of the European Union.
