A scientist from Ukraine received an award from the International Astronomical Union

Ukrainian scientist Lev Stanislavsky became a laureate of The IAU PhD Prize of the International Astronomical Union, which is awarded for outstanding achievements in the field of space research. About this reported press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

From 118 submitted applications for the prize for dissertations defended in 2024, members of the union chose nine winners among young astronomers who performed “the most outstanding work”. All branches of the union supported the decision to award a separate award to Lev Stanislavski for his research on “New astrophysical possibilities of radio astronomy of the longest wavelengths”.

Prize winners will be invited to present their research papers during the Chapter Days at the IAU General Assembly in August 2027 in Rome. Lev Stanislavskyi is a junior researcher at the Department of Astrophysics of the Radio Astronomy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a Doctor of Philosophy and the first Ukrainian to receive this award.

In his dissertation, he conducted experiments to create new means and technologies — particularly antennas and amplifiers — for exploring the universe. The scientist conducted his research in Kharkiv near the front during a full-scale invasion. Lev Stanislavsky also participated in the restoration of the new GURT radio telescope, which was damaged after February 2022. After the repair, thanks to this instrument, scientists were able to study the change in the radiation of the supernova Cassiopeia A.

The IAU is the world’s largest professional astronomical organization, which unites about 13 thousand specialists and is engaged in scientific initiatives and the naming of celestial bodies. Its awards are considered the most prestigious for young scientists in the field of astronomy. Those who conducted research in difficult conditions are noted separately.
