A spokesman for the State Department explained why the United States does not recognize the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Washington considers the introduction of large-scale sanctions against Russia more effective than giving it the status of a state sponsor of terrorism. This position he voiced during the briefing.

“We do not believe that state sponsor of terrorism status is the most effective way to achieve existing political goals when we talk about Russia.” – said Miller.

He explained that such status can complicate the work of international humanitarian organizations in the region and cause other negative consequences. Instead, the sanctions already implemented against Russia demonstrate practical effectiveness. As an example, Miller mentioned the situation with Russian tankers that began to stop at ports around the world after the introduction of energy restrictions.

“These are just the consequences of the latest package. If you look at the overall combined regime of restrictions that we have put in place – including sanctions and export controls – we have determined that this will have a greater impact than state sponsor of terrorism status.”, – added Miller.
