Act of vandalism in Lviv: unknown persons desecrate graves of heroes at Lychakiv cemetery (video)

On the night of October 20, unknown persons committed an act of vandalism at the Lychakiv cemetery in Lviv, damaging the graves of Ukrainian soldiers, political prisoners and volunteers buried in the field of honor. Currently, law enforcement officers are searching for the perpetrators. About this reported Yevhen Boyko, manager of affairs of the Executive Committee of the Lviv City Council, on his Facebook page.

“At night, at 2:42 a.m., vandals desecrated the graves of our Heroes on the field of honorable burials No. 76 of the Lychakiv cemetery. Rest assured, the scoundrels will be punished.” – noted Boyko.

According to preliminary information, 23 burials were affected: 17 graves of military personnel, three graves of political prisoners and two of volunteers. The released photos show that the attackers threw flowers, broke lamps and ceramic figures of angels.

Later, Yevhen Boyko specified that, according to preliminary data, the act of vandalism was probably committed by a woman. The police are reviewing surveillance footage and trying to establish all the circumstances.

“We will strengthen security so that such cases do not happen again”, – added Boyko.

The deputy head of the NGO “Families of the Fallen Heroes of Lviv Region” Helena Bilyk noted that such cases had happened before, but for the first time on such a scale. According to her, the cameras show a woman smashing everything that was on the tombstones.

Among the damaged graves was the grave of soldier Maksym Ovcharuk, who died in 2015 in Debaltseve. His wife, Alina Vlasenko, with tears in her eyes, asks how this could happen.

The grave of the chief sergeant of the Border Service Denys Snigur, who died in March 2022, was also damaged. His mother, Olena Snigur, expressed deep pain that, in her opinion, “even after death there is no peace for our children.”

The police of the Lviv region continues to identify the culprits and resolves the issue of the legal qualification of the event.
