After the failure in the elections, the leaders of the German parties SPD and FDP announced the end of their careers

The head of the faction of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the Bundestag, Rolf Mützenich, decided to resign after the party’s unsuccessful result in early parliamentary elections. Together with him, Christian Lindner, former Minister of Finance and leader of the Free Democratic Party (VDP), is ending his political career. About this informs NTV.

In his letter to the members of the faction, Mützenich noted that it is time to hand over the leadership to the “younger”. 47-year-old Lars Klingbeil was nominated in his place. According to him, this step will help unite the party and parliamentary leadership in one hand. According to forecasts, difficult times await the party, and it may have to agree to a coalition with the CDU/CSU, despite political differences.

VDP leader Christian Lindner also announced the end of his political activities. He has led the party since 2013, but after the collapse of the traffic light coalition, the Liberals were defeated in a snap election with 4.4% of the vote. Since the party did not overcome the 5% barrier, it did not enter the parliament, which was the second such case after 2013.

“I leave active politics with only one feeling – gratitude for almost 25 years, full of plans and discussions”, – said Lindner.

We will remind that on February 23, early elections to the Bundestag were held in Germany, which determined the new chancellor and the composition of the new parliament. According to the announcement of the Federal Election Commission, the CDU/CSU block won the official victory, which received 28.5% of the votes.
