Against the backdrop of the escalation of the war in Ukraine, Hungary decided to install additional air defense systems

In the north-east of Hungary, near the border with Ukraine, air defense systems have begun to be deployed. About November 20 reported Minister of Defense of Hungary Kristof Shalay-Bobrovnytskyi. In his opinion, the Russian-Ukrainian war has reached unprecedented proportions and is in the most dangerous phase.
According to the Hungarian publication Telex, Shalay-Bobrovnytskyi did not directly explain the reasons for strengthening air defense, but his words may be related to the fact that Ukraine received permission to use Western weapons for strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as to changes in Russia’s nuclear doctrine .
The statement was made after a meeting of the Defense Council of Hungary held by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss the situation surrounding the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The minister did not specify which air defense systems will be installed in the northeast of the country. However, last year, Hungary along with four other EU countries purchased French Mistral air defense systems. In 2020, the Hungarian government also agreed to purchase NASAMS systems from the Norwegian company Kongsberg and the American manufacturer Raytheon Technologies.
The deployment of air defense systems indicates Hungary’s readiness for possible threats in the region against the background of the tense situation due to the war in Ukraine.
