April 26: memorable dates and events

April 26 marks:
International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster. The accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power disaster in the history of mankind, which claimed lives and caused irreparable damage to the environment. As a result of the Chernobyl reactor explosion in April 1986, a radioactive cloud covered part of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
The total radiation of the isotopes released into the air was 50 million curies, which is 30-40 times more than during the explosion of the bomb in Hiroshima in 1945. About 4,000 people died as a result of the explosion, including those who died decades after the accident from illnesses caused by radioactive exposure. In total, about 600,000 people received it at that time.
According to the International Program of the World Health Organization, 600,000 people participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, including the entire staff of the Chernobyl NPP. Since 2017, documents related to the Chernobyl accident have been entered into the international register of the UNESCO Memory of the World program.
International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters — the date was established by the UN General Assembly in December 2003 in honor of the memory of all victims of radiation accidents, as well as to raise awareness of the risks associated with the use of radiation. It also reminds people of the need to support victims and continue research in the field of radiation safety.
