March 4: holidays and events on this day
On March 4, the world celebrates World Engineering Day, World Anti-Sexual Exploitation Day, World Obesity Day, International Game Makers Day, International Pancake Day, and Microphone’s Birthday. Significant and interesting historical events took place on this day in different years.
World Engineering Day
This holiday is celebrated to emphasize the role of engineers in the development of society, science and technology. It was established by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations in 2019, and UNESCO officially recognized this day as an international holiday. The purpose of the day is to popularize engineering professions, draw attention to the global challenges solved by specialists in this field, and inspire the younger generation to choose technical specialties.
Engineers play a key role in the development of civilization. Thanks to them, the first bridges, mechanisms and electronics appeared, without which it is impossible to imagine the modern world. Their developments change human life, providing comfort, safety and technological progress. Without engineers, there would be no cell phones, cars, space rockets, or even simple things like traffic lights and water systems. Their contribution to world progress is limitless, and the future of humanity depends on their ideas and decisions.
Interesting facts
One of the oldest engineering structures is the Great Pyramid of Cheops. It was built more than 4,500 years ago, and it is still not known for sure how exactly the ancient Egyptian engineers were able to calculate its construction so accurately without modern technology.
The first patented microprocessor, which became the basis of all modern computers, was created by Intel company engineers in 1971. It contained 2,300 transistors, while today’s chips have billions.
The longest bridge in the world, the Great Danyang-Kunshan Bridge in China, stretches 164.8 km. Engineers designed its structure to withstand earthquakes and typhoons.
Engineering technologies are used even in medicine. For example, a robotic surgical system Da Vinci allows you to perform complex operations with minimal intervention, ensuring high accuracy of manipulations.
Many engineering discoveries happened by accident. So, the microwave oven was invented after the engineer Percy Spencer noticed that the chocolate in his pocket melted under the influence of microwave radiation during experiments with radar.
According to UNESCO, there is a global shortage of engineers, especially in the field of renewable energy and sustainable construction. Therefore, this day is also a reminder of the importance of supporting education in technical fields.
Although engineering has existed since ancient times, modern fields such as robotics, space engineering and biotechnology are opening up completely new horizons for mankind.
World Day Against Sexual Exploitation
This day is celebrated to draw attention to the problem of sexual violence and human trafficking. The event was launched in 2009 by the non-governmental organization GIPF, which is engaged in protecting the rights of victims of exploitation and fighting this phenomenon at the international level. The main aim of the day is to raise awareness of sexual exploitation, call for stronger legislation and support for those affected by this crime.
Sexual exploitation remains one of the most serious forms of human rights violations. Millions of people, many of whom are children and women, are victims of violence and forced prostitution. According to international organizations, human trafficking is one of the most profitable criminal businesses in the world, so fighting this phenomenon requires joint efforts of states, human rights organizations and society.
Interesting facts
Human trafficking remains a global problem, and even in developed countries, victims often find themselves without adequate protection. According to the UN, about 72% of victims of sexual exploitation are women, while 23% are children.
Sexual exploitation often goes unseen because many victims are afraid to seek help because of threats from perpetrators or public condemnation. That is why human rights organizations are actively working to ensure the safety of victims and guarantee them the opportunity to start a new life.
Technology plays a dual role in this problem: on the one hand, digital platforms are used by criminals to spread exploitation, and on the other hand, it is modern monitoring and data analysis methods that help expose criminal networks and rescue victims.
In some countries, strict laws have been introduced that provide criminal liability not only for those who organize sexual exploitation, but also for clients of such services. For example, in Sweden there is a model in which punishment threatens the buyers of sexual services, and not the women who are forced to engage in prostitution.
World Obesity Day
This day is celebrated every year on March 4, starting from 2020. Until now, it was held on October 11, but at the initiative of the World Federation of Obesity (World Obesity Federation) date was changed to better coordinate international efforts to combat this problem. The main goal of the day is to raise awareness about the risks of obesity, its prevention and ways of treatment.
Obesity is a global health problem that significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases. It affects both adults and children, and the prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide. Factors contributing to this are an unbalanced diet, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and environmental influences.
On this day, medical organizations, governments and activists conduct campaigns aimed at educating the public about a healthy lifestyle, the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition. Special attention is paid to combating the stigma of overweight people, because obesity is not only a matter of individual choice, but also a complex medical and social problem.
Interesting facts
According to the WHO, the number of overweight and obese people in the world has more than tripled since 1975. Today, more than 1 billion people are obese, and this number continues to rise.
Adult obesity rates are highest in developed economies, especially in the United States, where more than 40% of adults are obese. However, the problem increasingly affects low- and middle-income countries, as the availability of high-calorie foods increases and the level of physical activity decreases.
Obesity is not always the result of overeating. It can be caused by hormonal disorders, genetic predisposition, stress and certain diseases.
Excess weight not only affects appearance, but also increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and some types of cancer.
It is interesting that even a small decrease in body weight (by 5-10% of the total weight) can significantly improve a person’s health. This reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases and improves the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
Scientific studies have proven that lack of sleep is directly related to obesity. People who sleep less than 6 hours a day have increased levels of the hormone ghrelin, which causes a feeling of hunger, which can lead to overeating.
Some countries have introduced taxes on sugary drinks and junk food to reduce their consumption. For example, in Mexico, after the introduction of such a tax, the sale of carbonated drinks decreased by 6-12%, which positively affected the level of sugar consumption.
International day of game masters
This day is celebrated to honor those who create, host and moderate gaming sessions in tabletop role-playing games. This holiday is dedicated to Game Masters (or Game Masters) who are key figures in the world of tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder and many others. Thanks to their imagination and organizational skills, players can immerse themselves in exciting stories, solve mysteries, fight monsters and experience epic adventures.
The role of the game master includes not only managing the rules and the scenario, but also creating the atmosphere, adapting the plot to the actions of the players and maintaining interactivity. It requires creativity, improvisational skills and the ability to maintain a balance between the complexity of the game and the satisfaction of the participants.
This day is an opportunity to thank game masters for their work and inspiration, because it is they who make role-playing games unforgettable. In the board game community, this day is a tradition for players to organize special gaming sessions, give token gifts to masters and share their favorite gaming moments.
Interesting facts
This holiday came about thanks to a fan initiative in the world of tabletop RPGs. It has no official status, but is widely celebrated in gaming communities.
Gamemasters often spend hours preparing a game—creating the world, characters, maps, puzzles, and challenges. Some of them even invent their own rules and mechanics, making each campaign unique.
Although masters control the game, they can also be surprised by unexpected decisions of the players. This is what makes tabletop RPGs so exciting and unpredictable.
Role-playing games, conducted by experienced masters, sometimes turn into real art projects. Some campaigns have inspired books, comics, and even TV series, like the popular one Critical Role.
International pancake day
International Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is celebrated in many countries around the world on the last day before the start of the 40-day Easter fast. This holiday does not have a fixed date, as it depends on the Easter calendar, but always falls on a Tuesday.
The tradition of celebrating this day is related to the fact that before fasting, people tried to use the leftover milk, eggs and butter, preparing various dishes, including pancakes. In many cultures, the pancake symbolizes the sun and the arrival of spring, so the holiday has acquired a special meaning.
Interesting facts
The tradition of celebrating Shrove Tuesday dates back to the Middle Ages, when people cleaned their homes of foods prohibited during Lent.
Shrove Tuesday is not only a culinary, but also a cultural holiday.
In Great Britain, the so-called is popular Pancake Race — a race during which participants run with a pan, throwing pancakes. This tradition dates back to the 15th century, when one woman, hearing the church bell, rushed to the service without letting go of the frying pan.
In France, there is a belief: if you throw a pancake in the air and catch it on a pan while holding a coin in the other hand, it will bring good luck for the whole year.
In the USA and Canada Shrove Tuesday is also called Pancake Day, and on this day, restaurants often hold promotions, giving away free pancakes.
Microphone’s birthday
It was on this day in 1877 that the American inventor Emil Berliner patented the first microphone, which became a key element in the development of communication and sound recording. His invention changed the way sound was transmitted, becoming the basis for telephone technology, radio broadcasting and the music industry.
The microphone plays an important role in many areas of modern life: from journalism and television to music and science. Thanks to it, it became possible to record voices, conduct remote communication, organize concerts and broadcasts. Today there are many types of microphones – condenser, dynamic, ribbon – each of which has its own purpose and characteristics.
Interesting facts
Emil Berliner not only invented the microphone, but also developed the gramophone record, which became the basis for the development of the music industry.
The first microphones were used in telephony, in particular in the devices of Alexander Bell, and they greatly improved the quality of voice transmission.
Modern microphones can pick up sounds that the human ear cannot hear, and some models can even work in space.
The most sensitive microphones are used in scientific research, for example, to detect seismic waves or analyze ultrasonic signals in nature.
The microphone’s birthday reminds us of how much this device has influenced the modern world by allowing people to hear each other at any distance.

Eugene Paton’s birthday
On March 4, 1870, Evgeny Oskarovich Paton was born in Nice – an outstanding mechanical scientist, engineer and founder of the school of bridge construction. His contribution to the development of welding technologies and construction mechanics became the basis for many engineering achievements of the 20th century. He headed the Institute of Electric Welding, which has been named after him since 1953, and it was thanks to his work that automatic welding became one of the key technological breakthroughs.
During the Second World War, the welding machines he developed allowed the Soviet industry to achieve record rates of tank production. They became an important factor in the victory, because they ensured the high quality and speed of production of armored vehicles. Many researchers believe that Eugene Paton’s automatic welding machine should be placed in the same row with the legendary “Katyusha”, the Il-2 attack aircraft and the T-34 tank as another weapon that helped win the victory.
In peacetime, Paton devoted his life to building bridges. According to his projects, more than 50 bridge structures were built, among which one of the most famous is the Paton bridge in Kyiv. It was the world’s first all-welded bridge, which became a real engineering breakthrough of its time.
His ideas were ahead of their time, and many of them continue to be used in modern bridge construction, rail transport and even the space industry. Thanks to his developments, ultra-strong alloys are created, which are used in construction and high-tech production. He was called a man from the future, and his scientific output remains relevant even in the 21st century.
