Austria freezes salaries of top officials

The Austrian government has reached an agreement on zero salary increases for the state’s top officials, taking a step towards harmonizing the issue at the federal and state levels. About this informsARA agency.

The leaders of Austria’s three coalition parties released a joint statement in which they announced another wage freeze. The restriction will apply to the federal president, members of the government, state secretaries, the head of the Accounting Chamber, members of parliament, including speakers.

This decision is aimed at regulating the system of salary increases for civil servants, which is currently determined by various mechanisms at the national and regional levels. Last year, the Accounting Chamber of Austria criticized the existing situation, calling it one that does not meet the principles of transparency and fairness regarding the remuneration of officials.

The federal government has called on state governments to follow suit and also refrain from raising wages until the relevant indexation legislation is passed, scheduled for autumn 2025.

It will be recalled that in June 2022, representatives of EU member states and the European Parliament agreed on a draft law on minimum income, designed to guarantee a decent standard of living for all citizens of the European Union.
