“Born in a shirt”: Lviv doctors saved the girl by removing a fragment from her heart

Lviv doctors saved the life of a 22-year-old girl who was a victim of the shelling of the city on September 4. A week after the complex operation, she was discharged from the hospital, informs “The First Medical Association of Lviv”.

This case demonstrates the high level of professionalism of doctors and the coordinated work of the team of the Heart and Vascular Center of St. Panteleimon Hospital. After the missile strike, the girl was brought to St. Luke’s Hospital with a severe chest wound. The fragment that entered her heart posed a serious threat to life, causing severe pain and dangerous hemorrhage.

Paramedics quickly placed a drain to stop the bleeding, after which the patient was transported to the Heart and Vascular Center for emergency surgery. Time was short, and every minute was worth its weight in gold.

Cardiac surgeons led by Roman Domasich performed an operation on the working heart, removing a 1×1.5 cm fragment stuck between the left and right ventricles. The operation lasted an hour and a half, and after successfully removing the fragment, the doctors sewed up the affected area of the heart. Domashich emphasized that the patient’s condition was critical, and her survival can be called a real miracle.

“She was actually born in a shirt. I wonder how she got to us! Because as soon as we got the fragment out of the heart, the affected area started bleeding profusely. It’s a penetrating wound to the heart. Another millimeter and she would have died.”, he said.

Thanks to the professional actions of doctors, the girl survived and quickly recovered. Already on September 11, she was discharged from the hospital, and now her life is not in danger.
