Bulgaria calls on the EU to introduce a ban on the import of Ukrainian eggs

The Minister of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria, Giorgi Takhov, called on the European Commission to introduce a ban on the import of Ukrainian eggs to Bulgaria. He made such a statement did during the meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries held in Brussels.

According to Takhov, Bulgarian egg producers are suffering significant losses due to the growing import of fresh eggs from Ukraine. In the first half of 2024, the volume of imports reached 2,618 tons, which is five times more compared to the same period last year. In addition, import prices for Ukrainian eggs are significantly lower than domestic ones, which puts pressure on the Bulgarian market and affects the stability of local producers.

The minister emphasized that the existing protective measures at the EU level do not bring the expected results and are not effective for stabilizing the egg market in Bulgaria. He emphasized that it is important to find a balance between supporting the Ukrainian people and protecting the interests of Bulgarian farmers.

“Each country monitors the normal course of business processes in its country in order to protect the interests of its agricultural producers”, – said Takhov.

He also clarified that the problem concerns fresh chicken eggs, the import of which not only creates tension on the market, but also leads to the bankruptcy of Bulgarian poultry farms.

In addition, the second year of implementation of strategic plans within the framework of the Common Agrarian Policy was discussed at the meeting of the EU Council, the minister added.
