Canadian Prime Minister announces early parliamentary elections

Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap parliamentary election for April 28, explaining that he needs a strong mandate to counter the economic threat posed by Donald Trump’s tariffs. About this informs Reuters.

Although the next election was scheduled for Oct. 20, Carney decided to take advantage of the Liberal Party’s surge in support after Trump began threatening Canada in January and Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.

During the press conference, Carney said that the country is going through “the most serious crisis of our lifetime”, in particular because of Trump’s aggressive trade policy. His statement was made after receiving permission to hold elections.

“There is so much more to do to keep Canada safe. Invest in Canada, build Canada, unite Canada. That’s why I’m asking my fellow Canadians for a strong positive mandate. I just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call an election for April 28, and she agreed.” – noted Carney.

Karna now has five weeks to fight for the win. According to polls, the Liberals, who have been in power since 2015 and lost ground to the Conservatives at the beginning of the year, are now slightly ahead of the opposition.

We will remind that on March 14, the newly elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Mark Carney, was sworn in, officially assuming the post of Prime Minister after the resignation of Justin Trudeau.
