China launches large-scale military exercises near Taiwan, announces ‘stern warning’

China has launched a new phase of military exercises near Taiwan, calling it a warning signal to ‘forces supporting the island’s independence’. Reuters reports .
The military exercises, called Joint Sword-2024B, are being held in the Taiwan Strait, as well as in areas to the north, south and east of the island. The exact date of their completion has not been announced.
“These exercises also serve as a stern warning against separatist actions by Taiwan’s independence forces. This is a legitimate and necessary operation to protect state sovereignty and national unity,’ the statement said.
The Taiwanese government described these actions as ‘blatant provocations’ that seriously undermine regional stability. The authorities also reported that Chinese warships and aircraft were approaching its territory from different directions, which increased tensions in the region.
‘The latest war games and China’s refusal to renounce the use of force are blatant provocations that have seriously undermined regional peace and stability,’ Taiwan said.
The drills come amid rising tensions following Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s speech at a national holiday, where he stressed that only the Taiwanese people have the right to determine their future. China strongly condemned this statement and continued military manoeuvres near the island.
The United States expressed serious concern about the military exercises of the People’s Liberation Army of China in the Taiwan Strait and around the island, saying that it poses a threat of further escalation in the region.
‘We urge the PRC to act with restraint and avoid any further actions that could undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as the region as a whole, which is essential to regional peace and prosperity and a matter of international concern,’ said US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
Washington stressed that it is closely monitoring China’s actions and maintaining coordination with allies and partners.
