Cryptocurrency exchange Lykke confirmed hacking and loss of $22 million of client funds: details

The Swiss cryptocurrency exchange Lykke became the victim of a hacker attack. As a result of the exploit, the attackers were able to steal more than $22 million worth of crypto-assets. This information was officially confirmed by the exchange after rumors of a hack and suspension of withdrawals began to spread on social networks.
The first reports of problems with the exchange and possible hacking appeared from Lykke users. However, official confirmation from the company came only two days later.
Blockchain security researcher SomaXBT claimed to have discovered the hacking attack and accused the Lykke team of trying to cover up the incident. He posted a screenshot of a message on Discord, purportedly from the exchange’s team, that referred to “unscheduled full maintenance.” SomaXBT claimed that Lykke lost $19.5 million worth of crypto assets, but the team is trying to hide this fact.
In its official message, Lykke acknowledged the fact of the attack and apologized to the affected users. The exchange assured that clients’ funds are safe thanks to “solid reserves and a diversified portfolio”.
Lykke also reported that it was able to establish the attacker’s IP addresses, which will be used to conduct a criminal investigation. In addition, the exchange has hired a cyber security team to block and recover stolen assets.
