Czech President: Trump’s deal with Putin may be unfavourable for Europe and Ukraine

Czech President Petr Pavel has warned against putting too much faith in US President-elect Donald Trump to end the war in Ukraine. In his opinion, if Trump can achieve peace, it can only happen through concessions from Ukraine. Pavel expressed this opinion on the eve of the Prague Defence Summit international conference, Aktuality reports.

He noted that many countries have pinned their hopes on Trump, who promised ‘rapid change’ and the end of the war in Ukraine within a day. However, according to the Czech president, Trump is likely to try to strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin that will not take into account the interests of Ukraine and Europe. Such an agreement could include territorial concessions to Russia or a decade-long delay in Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

Pavel also pointed out that Ukraine’s allies did not provide sufficient support from the very beginning, which allowed Russia to seize part of its territory. He believes that the war is now unfolding in a direction that is more favourable to Moscow, making it more difficult to negotiate between the parties.

Earlier, Pavel stressed the need for Ukraine to have ‘realistic’ expectations of the war, acknowledging that some territories may ‘temporarily’ remain under Russian control. This, in his view, is similar to a proposal that Trump may offer, and which he is critical of.
