Final decisions of the BRICS in Russia: Ukraine was mentioned once

The BRICS group of countries adopted a final declaration in which it expressed its position regarding the war in Ukraine and international efforts to resolve it. The document contains several key theses that reflect the common views of the member countries on the conflict and ways to resolve it.

According to the message published by the Kremlin portal, the results of the second day of discussions were summarized after a meeting of the leaders of nine countries, including: President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, President of Egypt Abdelfattah Sisi, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Brazilian President’s representative, Foreign Minister Mauro Luis Iequer Vieira. The leaders took a joint photo against the backdrop of the banners of the 16th summit in Kazan.

One of the main topics discussed was cooperation with the countries of the “Global South”. The leaders emphasized the importance of taking into account the needs of these countries to create a more just world order. The declaration also mentioned the war in Israel, where participants expressed support for the Palestinian group Hamas.

The fifth point of the declaration talks about strengthening cooperation with the countries of the Global South, emphasizing the need for a fairer distribution of resources on a global scale. The sixth and eighth points are devoted to the activities of the UN, where the participants express their support for its efforts in maintaining international peace and call for the reform of the Security Council, in particular the involvement of the countries of Asia, Africa and South America.

The declaration also contains a call to resolve the conflict in Ukraine through negotiations and diplomacy. Participants welcomed proposals for peace mediation, referring to the Sino-Brazilian peace initiative.

We remind you of the national positions regarding the situation in and around Ukraine, outlined at relevant forums, including the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly. We emphasize that all states must act in accordance with the goals and principles of the UN Charter in all their entirety and interrelatedness. We are pleased to note the relevant proposals for mediation and good offices designed to ensure a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy“, the statement says.

Previously, Russia supported the Sino-Brazilian peace plan, which provides for the end of the war along the existing front line.
