Dog Patron and children of war: how schoolchildren learn safety rules

In the conditions of war, the issue of security becomes especially urgent, because even everyday actions can hide threats. Educational programs that help children learn the basics of fire safety, the rules of behavior with explosive objects, as well as how to behave in the dark or on the water, become extremely important. Such initiatives not only save lives, but also foster a conscious attitude to danger.

One of the vivid examples of such efforts was the victory of the team of Merefyansk Lyceum No. 3, located in Kharkiv Oblast, in the all-Ukrainian competition “Dvizimba 2.0”, organized by UNICEF Ukraine and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. A social video about mine safety, shot by lyceum students, won first place among 608 participating teams. This achievement not only highlights the importance of educational initiatives, but also demonstrates how young people can influence society through modern media.

Social videos as an effective teaching tool

The team, which calls itself PPO (Fire Patrol), consisted of eight students aged nine to 15. They gathered every Saturday to create a video that turned into a unique educational product within two months. By in words Yevgenia Ashuyeva, the head of the team, the children not only learned safety rules, but also taught others through an understandable and accessible video format, in particular on TikTok.

“We showed the rules of fire safety, mine safety, behavior in the dark and on the water. This format is better accepted by children than ordinary lectures.” Ashuyeva says.

Work on the video: from idea to implementation

Oleksandr Graur, a member of the team, admits that the process of creating the video was not easy. Many times it was necessary to change the script, reshoot scenes, invent new ideas. However, the students were motivated, knowing that their contribution could save someone’s life.

“It’s an important thing to teach others about safety. And we also had fun doing it.” Oleksandr shares his impressions.

A meeting with Patron the dog: motivation for new achievements

After winning the competition, the team received an award — a meeting with Patron the dog and his owner, Mykhailo Iliev, head of the pyrotechnic department of the State Emergency Service in the Chernihiv region. Patron the dog, which became a symbol of mine safety in Ukraine, made a great impression on the children.

Iliev conducted a lesson on explosive objects, explained how to recognize them and how to avoid threats. According to him, children have become more attentive and ask a lot of questions about mine safety.

“The main thing is that they do not neglect safety in the future,” – emphasizes the pyrotechnician.

Safety through modern technologies

The meeting with Patron and the experience of creating social videos inspired the Lyceum team for further work. According to Yevgenia Ashuyeva, the children received gifts from UNICEF — a set of bloggers, which they are already using to create new content.

“It was a wonderful experience for both the children and me. We not only learned, but also rejoiced at each achievement together. Patron the dog inspires us to do even more for safety.” – says Ashuyeva.

The example of the Merefyansk Lyceum No. 3 team demonstrates how important it is to teach children safety rules in an understandable and accessible format. Social videos created by students not only teach, but also motivate others to join in spreading important knowledge.

In wartime, when threats become part of everyday life, such initiatives are invaluable. It is not only about security, but also about fostering responsibility, solidarity and confidence in the future. Every educated child is a step towards a safer society where life is valued and action is taken to prevent danger.
