Employment of Ukrainian refugees: new initiatives of the Swiss Federal Council

The issue of employment of Ukrainian refugees in Switzerland is extremely important, as providing the opportunity to work allows them to integrate into society, ensure financial independence and contribute to the economy of the host country. Switzerland, known for its high social standards, provides shelter to thousands of Ukrainians who fled the war, and strives to create conditions for them to live independently. Thanks to new government initiatives, the employment process will become easier, which will open up new opportunities for many Ukrainians.

New measures for employment of Ukrainians

On February 27, 2025, the Federal Council of Switzerland announced the introduction of new measures that should significantly simplify the process of employment of refugees from Ukraine. This is stated in the message Swiss info.

The main changes concern:

  • Abolition of the requirement to obtain an employment permit – instead, Ukrainians will simply need to register for legal access to the labor market.
  • The possibility of changing the place of residence – Ukrainian refugees will be able to move to other cantons if they find work there, which was previously complicated by administrative barriers.
  • Registration of the unemployed at state employment agencies – Ukrainians who are under temporary protection (status S) will be required to register with employment services.
  • Participation in programs of professional integration and reintegration – Ukrainians will be involved in training and adaptation programs that will help them integrate more quickly into the Swiss labor market.

In order to implement these measures, the Swiss government has started a consultation process on amendments to the relevant laws. It is expected that after the completion of the discussions and the introduction of changes, Ukrainians will have more opportunities for legal employment, which will help them adapt to life in Switzerland faster.

Temporary status for Ukrainians

Earlier, the Swiss government decided not to cancel the S temporary protection status for Ukrainians until March 4, 2026. This means that Ukrainians who left due to the full-scale invasion of Russia will be able to stay in the country until at least this date without having to apply for other forms of residence permits.

The new measures introduced by the Swiss government are an important step in supporting Ukrainian refugees. Simplifying the employment process, reducing administrative restrictions and ensuring access to the labor market will help Ukrainians not only to obtain a stable source of income, but also to integrate into society. Combined with the extension of temporary protection status, these initiatives demonstrate Switzerland’s commitment to providing long-term support to Ukrainians at this difficult time.
