EU condemns Russia’s launch of passenger flights to Abkhazia

The European Union strongly opposed the decision of the Russian Federation to resume regular air traffic with the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia. IN statements of the EU diplomatic service, which was also commented on by the spokesman for foreign affairs, Anuar al-Anoni, stated that the launch of flights without the consent of Tbilisi and in the absence of an international code for Sukhumi airport is another violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
The European Union confirmed its unchanged position regarding support for Georgia within its internationally recognized borders, stressing the importance of compliance with international law. Brussels emphasized that Moscow’s actions contradict established rules of international air travel and threaten security in the region.
It will be recalled that air flights to Abkhazia were suspended back in 1993 after the armed conflict between Tbilisi and the separatist administration. After agreements between Russia and Abkhazia in the summer of 2023, a test flight from Moscow was carried out in February 2025, and regular commercial flights began on May 1.
The first plane took off from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport and arrived in Sukhumi, where the airport, which does not have international recognition, is located.
Tbilisi also reacted sharply to the resumption of air traffic. Economy Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister of Georgia Levan Davitashvili called it a direct violation of international norms.
