Ex-football player Mikheil Kavelashvili became the new president of Georgia

On December 14, the electoral college of Georgia, the majority of which is controlled by the Georgian Dream party, elected Mikheil Kavelashvili as the country’s new president. About this informs “Echo of the Caucasus”.

This is the first presidential election, which was not conducted by a general vote of citizens, but through an electoral college. At the same time, the representative of the ruling party “Georgian Dream”, former football player and member of parliament Mikheil Kavelashvili was the only candidate for this position.

Only voters, members of the Central Election Commission and authorized representatives of the parliament apparatus had access to the voting procedure. Journalists were practically not allowed to observe the process.

For the legitimacy of the elections, the participation of the majority of the members of the collegium was necessary. For a candidate to win in the first round, he needed to receive at least two-thirds of the vote, or 200 out of 300.

The opposition parties did not nominate their representatives to the electoral college, giving their 55 seats to the “Georgian Dream” party. As a result, this political force received 211 representatives in the collegium: 89 from the parliament, 13 from the Supreme Council of Adjara and 109 from local municipal bodies.
