For 100 days, the kitchen train runs through Kharkiv region: 570,000 meals were prepared by benefactors

For 100 days, the Food Train, or the so-called kitchen train, runs through the Kharkiv region. During this time, benefactors distributed 570,000 meals to the residents of the region. The work of the charity train was especially relevant during the evacuation of the local population from areas near the war zone. The project will continue to work in the Kharkiv region.
570 thousand servings is 380 tons of food. 7-8 M1 Abrams tanks will weigh approximately the same. 160 tons of food, 800 cubic meters of water, and 50,000 kWh of electricity were needed to prepare such a large number of dishes.
Food Train is a joint project of Ukrzaliznytsia JSC and The Howard G. Buffett Foundation. The fund finances the operational activities of the train.
Meals prepared by the kitchen train team are sent to hospitals and temporary shelters for internally displaced persons. Food Train also prepared dinners for residents of remote areas who had difficulty cooking on their own due to power outages caused by shelling.
The kitchen train made its first flight last September. This is the first such project in the world. It consists of a locomotive and 6 special cars.
“The Food Train can operate autonomously for 5-7 days, and the train’s equipment allows you to prepare complete meals: soups, porridges, salads, meat, etc. Special thermal boxes installed inside the train allow you to easily transport ready-made lunch boxes with food from the kitchen train to the final destination consumer”, – said in Ukrzaliznytsia.
The kitchen train has focused its activities in Kharkiv region since March. In December, Food Train also made a three-day trip to the frontline regions of Ukraine. Then the team of the special train visited Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. In three days, 8,000 meals were prepared for the residents of the frontline areas as part of the project.
Also, on June 1, for Children’s Day, the kitchen train offered a special children’s menu. Then in Kharkiv, the Food Train team prepared 425 dinners for families with children who were evacuated from Liptsi, Vovchansk, Bily Kolodyaz, Stary Saltov, and for children from Kharkiv themselves, whose houses and apartments were destroyed due to constant shelling.
