Former Fox News anchor heads Pentagon: Senate decision

The US Senate has confirmed Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, despite significant doubts about his competence. The former Army veteran and former Fox News anchor will now be in charge of managing a defense budget that exceeds a trillion dollars. About this informs The Washington Post.

“The Senate has voted to confirm Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense after Vice President J.D. Vance cast the deciding vote. Hegseth’s nomination was hampered by allegations of wrongdoing. His appointment marks a dramatic political shift in United States national security policy.”, the message says.

Peter Brian Hegseth is an American TV presenter, writer and US National Guard officer, who is known for his criticism of US NATO allies and his opposition to providing military aid to Ukraine. In November 2024, Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Hegseth to the position of Secretary of Defense.

However, his candidacy caused serious doubts both among Democrats and among some Republicans due to the lack of experience to lead such a large-scale organization as the Pentagon. The position typically requires significant management experience and bipartisan support, which in Hegseth’s case led to a complicated approval process.

Despite the controversy, Hegseth received enough votes for confirmation and will now be able to implement his reform initiatives at the Pentagon.
