French Justice Minister Proposes Converting Homes for the Elderly into Prisons

The Minister of Justice of France, Gérald Darmanin, proposed to refurbish the houses for the elderly in prison. About this informs RTL.
Darmanen expressed his determination to increase the number of places in French prisons amid regular criticism of overcrowding. In particular, he suggested turning closed homes for the elderly into prisons.
“We are currently looking at closed nursing homes that could be converted to be able to house inmates very quickly.” Darmanen said.
In addition, the minister made a proposal about the possibility of renting places in prisons abroad.
“We have made proposals to our neighbors. In Spain, it is proposed to rent several hundred or even several thousand places. The same applies to Germany, where the prisons are full at 85%. We want this to happen as soon as possible.” Darmanen noted.
Regarding the construction of new prisons, the minister said that “ten companies responded to the tender for the construction of prisons within a year and a half.” As of May 1, nearly 83,700 people were being held in French prisons, a record number, while the number of places provided is only 62,570.
