G7 Finance Ministers Agree on Further Support for Ukraine

The finance ministers of the G7 countries agreed to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. This was stated by the Minister of Finance of Germany, Lars Klingbeil, informs Bloomberg.
“It became clear that in the G7 format the support will remain unchanged, and that Ukraine can count on strong solidarity and substantial support from the G7 countries”, Klingbeil said on the sidelines of the meeting of the “Big Seven” finance ministers in Canada.
However, as of the evening of May 21, the group has not yet adopted a final joint statement that would cement this commitment. The G7 includes the USA, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, as well as a representative of the European Union.
Discussions before the meeting were accompanied by some uncertainty, in particular, due to the question of whether the United States would maintain support for Ukraine in the event of Donald Trump’s return to power. It will be recalled that Trump partly blamed Kyiv for the war that Russia started in February 2022.
“We’re working hard on it — there are still a few things we need to address. But I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll get there.”, Klingbeil emphasized.
Prior to that, the head of the German Finance Ministry held a series of bilateral meetings with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Ukrainian Minister Serhii Marchenko, and representatives of European countries.
