Germany is delaying the adoption of a new package of EU sanctions against Russia

The EU countries could not accept the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, the reason for this was the actions of Germany, which is still delaying the process. Berlin has not yet agreed to the new sanctions package, despite withdrawing a clause that Germany considered problematic. This was reported by EU diplomats, according to Reuters. On June 20, the discussion of new restrictive measures against Russia will continue.

Politicians from 27 EU countries have been discussing the package for more than a month. The new measures include a ban on the transshipment of Russian liquefied natural gas and a plan to hold European operators accountable for sanctions violations by subsidiaries and partners in third countries.

Diplomats and a Reuters source familiar with the situation said the clause was removed from the final document after criticism from Germany.

This provision would make exporters responsible for the actions of partners in third countries, which are difficult for European companies to control.

The EU has been steadily increasing sanctions against Moscow over its military invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022, but these efforts are being undermined by the circumvention of sanctions by selling Russian energy through third countries.
