EU and the world

Greenland is offered to join the EU for “protection” from the US

Greenland is to consider rejoining the European Union as a defense against US President Donald Trump’s plans to buy the Arctic island. This was stated by Member of the European Parliament from Denmark Morten Løkkegaard, informs Political.

“We live in a world where no matter how independent you want to be, you have to be a member of alliances. And in my opinion, the EU is the best alliance you can join. This is true for Denmark, this is true for Greenland.” Lökkegaard noted.

According to him, Greenland is a natural candidate for joining the EU, as it has a developed democracy and an effective social security system. Although the island is formally part of Denmark, which is part of the EU, it left the community after a referendum in 1982 and has the status of an autonomous territory within the Danish kingdom.

At the same time, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, insists on the complete separation of the island from Denmark.

“We don’t want to be Danes. We don’t want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders”, he emphasized.
