Guterres explains why he spent UN Day in Putin’s company

The United Nations explained why Secretary-General António Guterres celebrated UN Day in Kazan together with Russian President Vladimir Putin. By in words according to UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Gaq, this happened because the BRICS summit was scheduled for October 24. Haq clarified that Guterres traditionally attends the BRICS summits, regardless of the date of their holding.

When asked whether Guterres plans to call on Putin to stop aggression against Ukraine, Hak replied that the UN Secretary General has voiced his long-term positions on the need to comply with the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and relevant resolutions. Guterres spoke at the BRICS summit and held a bilateral meeting with Putin, during which he called for upholding the principles of peace and sovereignty that are important to all states, including Ukraine.

Note that UN Day, established by the General Assembly in 1947, is celebrated annually on October 24. On this day, at the BRICS summit, Guterres called for peace in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon and Sudan, emphasizing the importance of observing international norms and principles of the UN Charter.

Earlier, the UN Secretary General rejected the invitation to the first Global Peace Summit organized by Ukraine in Switzerland in June, although the UN was represented at the event.
