Hungary said that Ukraine should turn into a “buffer zone” between the EU and Russia

Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs János Bóka said that Ukraine can function as a buffer zone between the EU and Russia. About this informs Financial Times.
“We do not believe that the integration of Ukraine into the defense structures of the EU will contribute to the security of Europe. Instead, we see the need to create a buffer zone between Russia and the European defense structures, which would meet the interests of both Europe and Russia.”, – noted Boka.
At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine can play the role of a buffer zone only if an agreement is reached between the main international players, primarily the USA and Russia. Otherwise, according to him, Ukraine will continue to be a conflict zone.
“If the US or the EU does something in Ukraine without Putin’s approval, this in itself is a source of conflict”, – added Boka.
Budapest’s position on Ukraine is causing increasing concern among EU allies. Diplomats of other countries admit that the contradictions with Hungary seem insurmountable, and informal discussions are already underway within the EU about the possibility of depriving Budapest of its veto power over decisions that require unanimous support.
