In Singapore, the number of centenarians has doubled

In Singapore, the number of people reaching a respectable age has doubled. Experts explain this phenomenon with successful government policy and significant investments. About this informs BBC.

In August 2023, Singapore was awarded the status of the world’s sixth “blue zone”, a term used to denote regions where people live longer and healthier lives due to cultural, lifestyle and dietary characteristics. This is the first new inclusion in such zones in several decades.

At the same time, Singapore is significantly different from other blue zones, such as Ikaria in Greece or Nicoya in Costa Rica. In his case, the main role in life expectancy is played not so much by a traditional way of life, but by a proactive state policy. For Singaporeans, not only length of life is important, but also quality of life.

Local residents note that their attitude to health has changed significantly. This was influenced by high taxes on tobacco and alcohol, as well as strict laws that prohibit smoking in public places. In addition, these measures contributed to the improvement of the appearance of the city and made the streets more pleasant to live in.

Singapore’s healthcare system has received international recognition for its high quality of healthcare and efficiency in cost control. In addition, the local Health Council actively promotes healthy eating, taking into account the peculiarities of national cuisine.

However, the health of Singaporeans depends on more than just medicine. The developed transport system, cleanliness and aesthetics of the city encourage people to walk more, engage in physical activity and feel safe.
