In the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, far-right politician George Simion won

In the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, which took place on May 4, the leader of the far-right party “Alliance for the Union of Romanians” (AUR) George Simion won. The liberal mayor of Bucharest, Nikušor Dan, also made it to the second round. About this informs Digi24.ro.

According to the results of the vote count, the Central Electoral Bureau of Romania reported that George Simion won the first place with a result of 40.96%, while Nikušor Dan received 20.99%. In total, 3,862,404 citizens voted for Simion, and 1,979,711 voters voted for Dan.

The AUR political force, headed by Simion, opposes the provision of military aid to Ukraine, in particular against the transfer of Patriot air defense systems. George Simion himself said that if he wins the elections, he will appoint Kelin Georgescu as prime minister, a candidate who was previously disqualified for violating the electoral law.

Due to his statements regarding territorial claims to Ukraine and Moldova, Simion was banned from entering both countries. We are talking about historical territories, in particular Odeschyna and Bukovyna, which after 1940 became part of the USSR, and later became part of independent Ukraine.

In March 2025, Senator Diana Shoshoake, known for her demands for the “return” of Ukrainian territories, including in the south of Ukraine, wrote to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin with a complaint about not being allowed to participate in the presidential elections of Romania.

In the same month, the Central Election Bureau rejected the candidacy of Celin Georgescu, which provoked clashes between his supporters and the police.

We will remind that in March 2023, Shoshoake was entered into the “Peacemaker” database, and on March 24, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine initiated the introduction of sanctions against her as a person who poses a threat to national security.
