Children of war

In Ukraine, a register of child abductors who illegally took them to the territory of the Russian Federation appeared

After the journalistic investigation of the New York Times publication about the abduction of Ukrainian children from Kherson by the Russians gained wide publicity, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, turned to the Main Investigative Department of the SBU, the Office of the Prosecutor General, and the National Information Bureau to respond accordingly. In addition, the Main Directorate of Intelligence developed the “Child Abductors” portal. This is an online site that collects information about people involved in the forced deportation of young Ukrainians.

The Ombudsman notes that the facts of the removal of 46 children from the Kherson Children’s Home to the territory not controlled by Ukraine and the adoption of some of them contain signs of a war crime.

Changing the children’s citizenship and adopting some of them is another example of Russia’s unlawful, illegal and pre-planned genocidal campaign against Ukraine, approved by the top leadership of the aggressor country,” the human rights commissioner of the parliament notes.

Earlier, Mr. Lubinets reported that the subject of the return of deported Ukrainian minors will be one of the key topics during the Global Peace Summit, which will be held in Switzerland next week.

In order to record the actions of the Russian Federation regarding the removal of children from Kherson as a violation of the principles of international humanitarian law, the Ombudsman sent official statements to law enforcement agencies – the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Main Investigative Department of the SBU and the National Information Bureau.

Meanwhile, GUR collects all information about people involved in the deportation of minors and publishes them on one site. “Child kidnappers” is a section on the platform “War and Sanctions” Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The section already contains information on more than 200 criminals.

“The section of the portal contains a small dossier on each child abductor identified to date, links to news materials, information on the presence of sanctions against such persons. Scanned copies of documents confirming the deportation of children are also placed there. Information from the portal can be used for faster discovery and investigations and bringing the culprits to justice”, – informed GUR.
