Children of war

More than 2,230 children have been affected by the war in Ukraine: Prosecutor General’s Office

The tragic consequences of the war in Ukraine are felt most acutely when children suffer. Unfortunately, they become involuntary victims of the conflict, which destroys their childhood, deprives them of joy and hope for the future. Every time we learn of the death or injury of a child, it causes deep pain and questions: why does a war that should only affect adults affect the most innocent? They have no protective armor against the horrors of war. And every child who has become a victim of aggression is a loss that cannot be justified. There are more than two thousand affected children in Ukraine today, and this number continues to grow.

For information Office of the Prosecutor General, as of the morning of October 22, 581 children died as a result of Russian armed aggression. More than 1,649 children suffered injuries ranging from mild to life-changing. In total, more than 2,230 children were affected in Ukraine. These are not just dry statistics, these are destinies, lives, dreams that were cut short or suffered irreparable damage.

Children were the most affected in the Donetsk region — 595 small residents became victims of shelling and hostilities. 453 children were injured in the Kharkiv region. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast has 178 victims, Kherson Oblast — 180, Kyiv Oblast — 133, and Zaporizhia Oblast — 145. Behind each figure are personal tragedies of families who lost the most valuable.

In particular, new tragedies have occurred in recent days:

On October 21, an 11-year-old boy was killed as a result of shelling in the village of Yantarne in Donetsk region. His life ended suddenly, in the silence that became deadly due to an artillery strike.

On the same day, an 8-year-old girl came under fire in Zaporizhzhia and was seriously injured. These are injuries that can leave not only physical traces, but also psychological scars for life.

Also, on October 21, a 15-year-old girl was injured during the shelling of the village of Buzke, Novo-Odesa District, Mykolaiv Oblast. Her youth was disturbed by the war, which does not give peace to either adults or children.

On October 22, the city of Sumy was shaken by a new loss: a 14-year-old girl died as a result of shelling. Her life was cut short at a blooming age, when everything was just beginning.

Every child killed or injured is a pain that breaks the hearts of families that will never be the same again. These tragedies will forever remain part of our collective memory as a reminder that war destroys not only cities and infrastructure, but also human souls. It cripples not only the body, but also the future, which will never be the way we imagined it.

These children are symbols of how vulnerable we leave those who need our care the most. And while we continue to fight for freedom and peace, we cannot forget those whose worlds were destroyed by war and whose childhoods were cut short.
