In Ukraine, the names of military administrations of settlements will be changed

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, signed Law No. 13175, which concerns the change of names of military administrations of populated areas of Ukraine. Law card with the signature of the head of state published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

The press service of the parliament noted that the law was developed after the adoption in March 2023 of the law “On the prohibition of propaganda of Russian imperial policy”, which aims to systematically remove “imperial” narratives of Russia from the public space of Ukrainian settlements.

“According to the law, local councils have 6 months to remove from public space the names and monuments dedicated to Russian imperial figures and geographical objects of the aggressor country. If during this period the local councils do not comply with the law, such powers will pass to the heads of communities, who must fulfill them within the next 3 months. If the heads of communities do not remove the symbols of Russian imperial policy, then this function will be performed by regional state administrations within the next 3 months” – says the message.

Law No. 13175 stipulates that the names of military administrations must correspond to the official names of administrative-territorial units.

“If the settlement is renamed, the name of the corresponding military administration must also change. Such a decision is made by the head of the corresponding military administration”, — explained in the Verkhovna Rada.

The document was finally adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on April 30, 2025.
