Integration programme for Ukrainian doctors starts in the Netherlands in January 2025

Among the many challenges faced by Ukrainian refugees in Europe, integration into the labour market is one of the most difficult. This is especially true for highly skilled professionals, such as doctors, for whom it is important not only to find a job, but also to find a job that matches their professional level. The Netherlands is aware of this and is launching a new integration programme for Ukrainian medical professionals that not only provides employment opportunities but also offers support at all stages of adaptation. This programme includes both language learning and familiarisation with the Dutch medical system, as well as direct contact with potential employers, which gives Ukrainian doctors the opportunity to successfully integrate and work in a new environment.
Main components of the programme
The integration programme includes several key components, each of which contributes to the adaptation of Ukrainian doctors in their new workplace. These are not only language and professional courses, but also a complete immersion in a new cultural and professional reality.
- Dutch language course
- One of the main requirements for employment in the medical sector in the Netherlands is a high level of language proficiency. The programme offers a Dutch language course aimed at achieving B2 level. The B2 language level opens up the possibility of fluent communication in the work environment, understanding patients and colleagues, which is critical for the provision of quality medical care. The training also includes the study of specialised medical terminology, which allows doctors to adapt their knowledge to local standards.
- Immersion in Dutch medical culture and practice
- In addition to language skills, it is important to understand the peculiarities of the Dutch medical system and the culture of communication with patients. The programme provides an opportunity to get acquainted with medical ethics, the system of medical care, the rights and obligations of medical professionals in the Netherlands. This helps medical professionals understand new standards, avoid cultural misunderstandings and better adapt to local working conditions.
- Contact with potential employers
- One of the important components of the programme is the organisation of meetings with representatives of hospitals and other medical institutions in the region. Such events provide Ukrainian doctors with the opportunity to meet potential employers, learn about the requirements for candidates, and demonstrate their skills and experience. This not only increases the chances of getting a job, but also allows them to learn more about career opportunities.
Programme duration and expected outcomes
The programme is designed for six months of intensive training. During this time, participants must not only improve their language skills but also adapt to the local healthcare system. At the end of the programme, participants will receive a certificate confirming their participation and achievements within the programme, including proof of language and professional training. This certificate can be an important addition to your CV and prove your readiness to work in the Netherlands.
Conditions for participation in the programme
The programme is available to all Ukrainian refugees who meet the basic criteria:
- Refugee or displaced person status with a residence permit;
- Education or experience in the medical field – it is important to have proven work experience or a relevant diploma;
- Residence in the Utrecht region – the programme operates in this region, where it cooperates with three leading hospitals;
- Knowledge of the Dutch language at the B1 level – an elementary level of language skills is required to understand the educational material and communicate with colleagues;
- A certificate of no criminal record (VOG) – this document is required to work in the medical sector.
The programme is scheduled to start on 7 January 2025. After successful completion of the course, participants will be able to apply for vacancies in medical institutions in the Netherlands.
Registration process
To apply for the programme, you must provide the following documents:
- Personal data – passport or other identity document;
- Curriculum vitae – a description of education, work experience and professional skills;
- Residence permit photo – proof of legal residence in the Netherlands;
- Diploma rating from Nuffic – if possible, this will facilitate the process of adapting education to Dutch standards.
The integration programme for Ukrainian doctors in the Netherlands is not only a step towards employment, but also an opportunity for professional and personal growth in a new country. By supporting Ukrainian doctors, the Netherlands is taking a step towards enriching its medical system with highly qualified specialists. Programme participants who successfully complete all stages will have a chance to continue their careers and contribute to the Dutch healthcare system.
