Israel releases 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of Hamas deal

Israel released 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of an agreement with Hamas to free hostages held in the Gaza Strip and establish a ceasefire. About this informs The Jerusalem Post.

Palestinian prisoners were first transferred from various prisons to Ofer prison, located near Jerusalem. There, they underwent a security check, identification and medical examination before being released.

The Red Cross arranged for 78 prisoners to be transported to the Bituniya checkpoint in the West Bank, while 12 prisoners were transferred to East Jerusalem under Israeli police control.

Among those released were 69 women, including one minor, eight teenage boys and 12 men who were convicted of relatively minor offenses such as incitement, support for terrorist activities and disorderly conduct. About 2,000 prisoners are scheduled to be released as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement.

It will be recalled that earlier Hamas handed over three Israeli hostages to the Red Cross in Gaza City. It was the first hostage release since the ceasefire took effect.
