In Israel, a large-scale forest fire broke out in the Judean Mountains, which quickly spread to the outskirts of Jerusalem. Currently, 12 victims are known, including children. About this informs The Jerusalem Post.
Israel Fire and Rescue Commissioner Eyal Kaspi declared the highest level of alarm in connection with the situation. Strong winds and high temperatures are causing the fire to spread rapidly, prompting rescuers to block Highway 1 in Jerusalem as they try to bring the flames under control.
At this moment, fires have been recorded in several settlements, including Ashdod, Masuot Yitzhak, Shafir and Kfar Warburg. Due to the threat of the fire spreading, the police evacuated the residents of the village of Neve Shalom.
Among the injured are 12 people, six of whom are hospitalized with smoke poisoning, another is in a medium condition. Among the injured are two children under the age of one year. United Hatzalah, a volunteer organization, said it treated more than 30 people with symptoms of smoke inhalation; some of them needed oxygen support.
Emergency services also evacuated nine people from areas of heavy smoke who were trapped in their cars, three of which caught fire. About 120 firefighters and rescue teams were mobilized to fight the fire. Aircraft and helicopters are also involved in extinguishing. In connection with the scale of the fires, Israel appealed for help to five countries — Greece, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy and Cyprus.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Army ordered the Rear Command, the Air Force and other units of the IDF to provide support to the police and firefighters. Search and rescue units of the army and fire engines of the Air Force are actively involved in extinguishing the fire in the Jerusalem Hills area and are helping with the evacuation of residents.
