International Day for the Destruction of Weapons
This day is designed to draw attention to the serious consequences of prolonged armed conflicts in the countries of Southeast Europe. After the end of the conflicts, huge stockpiles of weapons were discovered in the region, which were in illegal possession and used for criminal activities, often resulting in human casualties.
In order to combat the illegal circulation of arms, the UN has developed a Regional Plan to Combat the Excessive Accumulation and Illicit Proliferation of Arms in the Balkans. The initiators of this project were RRS and UNDP, which provided financial and organizational support to the governments of the countries of South-Eastern Europe for the disposal of surplus and confiscated weapons.
Over the years, the campaign received support from the EU, UNDP and various non-governmental organizations, which contributed to a significant reduction in the number of weapons in the region. During this project, measures aimed at reducing the number of weapons and improving security were carried out in many countries.

- Record destruction of weapons: in 2001, more than 16,000 weapons were destroyed in Albania as part of the international disarmament campaign.
- Environmental disposal: some countries use innovative weapons disposal methods, such as melting down metal from firearms to create peaceful tools and items such as agricultural tools.
- UN support: The UN regularly conducts trainings and seminars for government and military officials in regions where the problem of illegal weapons is concentrated, to increase their competence in combating illegal arms trafficking.
