It is believed that Alexander Pushkin suggested the plot of “Dead Souls” to Gogol. The author wrote the work for almost 17 years. At first, the publication was banned by censorship, but Tsar Nicholas I imposed a resolution: “I agree” and a few days later Gogol received financial aid, and within a month the poem was allowed to be published.

The work was planned to be published in three volumes: Hell, Purgatory, Paradise. Gogol wanted to lead some of his heroes through these steps in earthly life. No one has ever read the second volume of Gogol’s famous Dead Souls. The writer, having already finished it, then suddenly burned all the manuscripts. In the third volume, according to Gogol’s plan, the main character had to repent and start doing good deeds.
