Losses from mined lands: four regions of Ukraine lose more than 20% of their GDP

Ukraine loses about $11.2 billion annually due to mines and other explosive objects, which is 5.6% of the country’s GDP at the level of 2021. About this reported press center of the Ministry of Economy based on the results of the conducted research.
“The biggest losses are due to a reduction in the export of agricultural products and a decrease in local tax revenues”, – stated in the message.
Chernihiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions lost more than 20% of their regional GDP due to mined territories.
In general, local budgets do not receive more than $1.1 billion in tax revenues, the Ministry of Economy emphasized.
According to World Bank estimates, about $35 billion is needed for the complete demining of the entire territory of Ukraine. The country will be able to compensate for these costs in less than three and a half years after the completion of the process of clearing the territories, the report states.
In June, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that as a result of Russia’s full-scale aggression, approximately 144,000 square kilometers of the territory of Ukraine remain potentially mined — that’s about 14.4 million hectares. According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, as of July, Kherson Oblast topped the list of regions in terms of demining.
