Military training for students will become mandatory in Ukraine from 2025

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has announced that starting in 2025, Ukraine’s higher education institutions will introduce basic military training. This innovation will apply to third-year students, while freshmen will not be affected, as most of them are only 17 years old. Currently, instructors and training grounds are being actively prepared. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Education Mykhailo Vynnytskyi in a comment to Novyny.LIVE. He stressed that this course is not related to mobilisation.
‘The mobilisation age remains 25. It’s just that a person who graduates from higher education should know how to handle weapons, how to defend themselves if necessary, how to provide first aid,” Vynnytskyi said.
According to him, all the necessary facilities for firing range training are currently being deployed, and instructor training will begin in January 2025.
Regarding military departments, the deputy minister explained that this issue will be considered over the next year, and basic general military training is already provided for in the 2025 budget.
On 21 June, the Cabinet of Ministers issued Resolution No. 734, according to which all men studying full-time or dual enrolment must undergo basic training. Female students can take such training if they wish, and it is voluntary for them. If they refuse to take the training, male students may be expelled.
