More than a million Syrians returned home after the overthrow of the Assad regime

After the overthrow of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, from 2025, about 1.2 million Syrians returned to the country. According to UN forecasts, this figure may increase to 3.5 million by the end of the year. About this informs Euronews.

Among those who returned, 885,000 are internally displaced persons, another 302,000 are refugees. Half of the Syrians who returned from abroad came from Lebanon, 22% from Turkey, and 13% from Iraq. At the same time, more than a quarter of the displaced are forced to live in damaged or unfinished houses. Although the Assad regime previously promised to ensure a “safe return”, many Syrians faced arrests or forced mobilization into the army.

The UN and humanitarian organizations report that returns are complicated by a lack of basic services, security issues and difficulties with paperwork. About 7 million internally displaced persons still remain in the country. At the same time, the economic situation worsens the ability to provide assistance due to a lack of funds, electricity and resources.

As of mid-March, only 12.5% of the planned $1.25 billion had been raised to provide housing, basic necessities, clean water, sanitation, food and agricultural support.

We will remind that on December 8, 2024, the Syrian rebels announced the liberation of Damascus. President Bashar Assad left the capital. The Russian Foreign Ministry later said that after talks with Syrian rebels, Assad agreed to a peaceful transfer of power and left the country. The same evening, Russian state media reported that Assad had arrived in Russia, where he had been granted asylum by the decision of Vladimir Putin.
