NATO ministers will discuss the creation of a 100 billion euro fund for Ukraine: details

Foreign ministers of NATO countries will meet in Prague on May 31 to discuss the creation of a fund in the amount of 100 billion euros intended to provide long-term military assistance to Ukraine. The meeting will take place ahead of the important NATO summit in Washington in July, where a final decision on the issue is expected.

About this informs  Euractive.

The initiative to create the fund arose in response to concerns about the stability of military support to Ukraine in view of possible political changes in NATO member states. The fund aims to ensure stable financing of military supplies to Ukraine, regardless of the political situation

It is noted that last month NATO representatives put forward a proposal to create a fund in the amount of 100 billion euros to support military supplies to Ukraine and to transfer the coordination of Western military aid from the Ramstein format to the “wing” of NATO.

The package was originally called a “NATO mission” but is likely to be changed to avoid the misleading term “mission” and potentially imply an operation on the ground in Ukraine – an idea strongly rejected by many leaders.

The creation of such a fund is aimed at protecting Kyiv’s long-term support from political changes in the governments of NATO countries. It is also reported that the creation of the fund raises a number of issues that need to be resolved. Among them – determination of the amount of contributions of each member state, as well as specific directions of use of funds. Various options for calculating contributions are being considered, in particular, based on the country’s GDP or its contributions to the general budget of NATO.
