Northern Ireland continues to be rocked by unrest for a third night in a row

In various areas of Northern Ireland, riots continue for the third night in a row, which began after the attempted rape of a 14-year-old teenage girl by two of her Romanian peers. About this informsReuters agency.

On June 9, two young men were arrested and charged with attempted rape. The hearing took place with the participation of a Romanian interpreter, through whom the defendants confirmed their names and ages.

On the night of June 9-10, people began to take to the streets: they built barricades, set fire to buildings and cars, and attacked the police using fireworks, bottles, and Molotov cocktails. The next night, the protests intensified — demonstrators set off fireworks, threw bricks, and law enforcement officers used special equipment, including water cannons and rubber bullets.

On the evening of June 11, a group of youths in balaclavas set fire to a leisure centre, but the scale of the disturbances in the town of Ballymena, which became the epicenter of the events, was smaller than in previous days. It is reported that several dozen people threw stones, fireworks and bottles with an incendiary mixture in the direction of the police. In response, the police used water cannons for the second time in a week. At the same time, this time the riots stopped quickly: most of the participants left by midnight.

During the first night of the riots, four houses were damaged, and several more were damaged. The police classify these events as racially motivated attacks. As a result of the clashes, 15 policemen were injured.
