On January 1, 2025, at 7:00 a.m., Ukraine completely stopped the transit of Russian natural gas through its territory. About this reported Ministry of Energy, noting that this decision was made to ensure national security. The Ukrainian side prepared in advance the appropriate infrastructure of the gas transportation system to ensure reliable gas supply for its consumers in the regime without transit.

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko called this event historic, stressing that Russia is losing European markets and experiencing financial losses. He noted that Ukraine’s decision is in line with the European Repower EU strategy aimed at renouncing Russian energy sources.

Ukraine informed international partners in advance of its intention to stop transit. This decision caused dissatisfaction in Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico even held talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. However, the Ukrainian government did not back down from its plans.

Against the background of the gradual loss of European oil and gas markets, Russia is trying to return to them using hybrid strategies. In this regard, Ukrainian experts and international partners emphasize the importance of introducing sanctions regarding the transit of Russian energy carriers.
