OpenAI will start paying taxes in Ukraine from January 2025

The American company OpenAI, known for its developments in the field of artificial intelligence, will become a value-added tax (VAT) payer in Ukraine from January 1, 2025. About this reported Yaroslav Zhelezniak, Deputy Chairman of the Tax Committee of the Verkhovna Rada.

The developer of the popular AI assistant ChatGPT has sent emails to its paid subscribers urging them to update their credentials with their VAT status. If the user is a payer, he needs to provide the relevant details. In the absence of such a status, 20% VAT will be automatically withheld from the cost of services, which OpenAI will transfer to the state budget of Ukraine.

According to the results of the third quarter of 2024, non-residents who supply electronic services transferred more than 3.1 billion hryvnias to the state budget of Ukraine as part of the so-called “Google tax”. This is 7% more than in the previous quarter. The number of companies that declared such obligations also increased by 7 units.

For the first half of 2024, the amount of revenues from the “Google tax” amounted to 5.289 billion hryvnias. Thus, for nine months of the current year, the budget received 8.4 billion hryvnias from digital services.

OpenAI is actively expanding its technologies. The company is considering launching a web browser with an integrated chatbot, and is also in talks with key partners to improve search functions.
