Panama filed a complaint with the UN over Trump’s threats to take over the canal

The permanent representation of Panama at the UN sent a complaint against the background of US President Donald Trump’s statements about his intention to take control of the shipping channel. About this informs Le Figaro.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Panama expressed concern over Trump’s remarks made during his inaugural address. In its appeal, Panama asked to spread this issue among the 15 members of the UN Security Council, which the country has been a member of since January 1.

The US president announced his intention to seize the Panama Canal during his inaugural address, accusing the local government of failing to meet its obligations regarding tariffs for the passage of ships.

Panamanian Foreign Minister Ramon Mulino responded the same day that the canal belonged and would remain under Panamanian control, emphasizing the principle of permanent neutrality in the management of the canal. He also added that no country in the world interferes in the governance of Panama.
