Pope Leo XIV proposes establishing a single date for celebrating Easter

Pope Leo XIV said that the Catholic Church is open to finding ways to establish a single date for the celebration of Easter. About this informs Vatican News.

The pontiff made the corresponding statement during an event dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea, a universal Christian meeting convened to resolve the theological disputes between the Byzantine bishop Alexander and presbyter Arius, who initiated his own teaching. Leo XIV recalled that among the goals of the Council of Nicea was the definition of a single date for the celebration of Easter.

“Unfortunately, differences in calendars no longer allow Christians to celebrate together the most important feast of the liturgical year, which causes pastoral problems in communities, divides families and weakens confidence in our witness to the Gospel.” – remarked the Pope.

He also noted that there are various options that allow the joint celebration of the “Holy of Holies” without violating the decisions of the Nicene Council.

“I would like to confirm the openness of the Catholic Church to the search for an ecumenical solution that would contribute to the common celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord and, thus, give greater missionary force to our preaching of the name of Jesus and salvation, born of faith in the saving truth of the Gospel”, – emphasized Leo XIV.
