Powerful explosion in Iranian port kills at least 40 people

A powerful explosion at the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran has killed at least 40 people and injured more than 1,200 others. About this informs Reuters.
The incident occurred in the Shahid Rajai Port section, which is Iran’s largest container hub. The explosion was so powerful that it blew out windows for several kilometers around, tore metal strips from shipping containers and caused serious damage to the goods inside. The epicenter of the explosion was the administrative building near the pier.
The shock wave destroyed an office building and damaged dozens of cars. The work of the port was temporarily suspended to eliminate the consequences. British security firm Ambrey said the port had received sodium perchlorate, a substance used to launch ballistic missiles, in March that could have caused the explosion if mishandled.
According to the latest data, the death toll in Iran’s largest port of Bandar Abbas has reached at least 40 people, while more than 1,200 have been injured. Firefighters continue to work to extinguish the fires that are still raging in various parts of the port.
The head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society said the fire was 90% contained, while officials reported the resumption of port operations in undamaged sections, Shahid Rajai.
